FedEx or Japan Post — which should you ship from Japan with?

These are the two families of service we ship with, and they behave very differently. The right answer depends on how heavy your parcel is, how big it is, and how quickly you need it — not on which brand you recognise.

FedEx: fast, tracked, volumetric

FedEx is the quickest option to most destinations, typically a few days, with detailed tracking throughout and a real service guarantee behind it. It is priced live, so the rate moves with fuel surcharges.

It bills on chargeable weight, meaning a large light box is priced on its size. For dense, valuable, or urgent parcels it is usually the better choice; for bulky light ones it is usually the expensive one.

Japan Post: cheaper, slower, actual weight

Japan Post services bill on actual weight, which makes them markedly cheaper for anything bulky and light. EMS is the fast option within that family; surface mail is by far the cheapest and by far the slowest, measured in weeks rather than days.

Coverage and transit times vary more by destination than FedEx, and tracking detail is generally lighter.

Choosing between them

As a rule of thumb: small and heavy, or needed soon, means FedEx. Large and light, or not urgent, means Japan Post. In between, compare the two at your actual weight — the cheaper carrier genuinely changes as weight rises, which is why our destination pages list every option side by side rather than recommending one.
